Long before generative AI and LLMs became widely accessible, a forward-thinking US startup set out to disrupt the food delivery market. The goal was to build a text-to-order platform that allowed consumers to skip delivery apps and order directly from restaurants using standard SMS.
The client initially hired a specialized AI firm, but development was slow and inefficient. They brought our team on to take over the entire ecosystem—from the web application to the mobile apps.
The project introduced two major technical bottlenecks:
Stateless State Management: SMS and text transactions are inherently stateless. Engineering a system that could handle complex, multi-turn conversational ordering logic without losing the user's context required highly intricate code architecture.
Infinite-Level Menu Recursion: Restaurant menus are deeply nested. The platform needed to support a multi-level, infinite parent-child relationship (items, modifiers, options, and sub-items). This required heavy, highly optimized recursive logic on the backend and a fluid, intuitive UI capable of rendering these complex relationships without lagging.
We accepted the challenge, taking the platform from a blank canvas to a fully realized production environment.
We took full ownership of the product lifecycle, engineering a custom, highly efficient AI-like conversational engine and launching the first complete prototype in just 6 months. We built the entire ecosystem utilizing Meteor for a highly responsive frontend, backed by robust, secure PHP APIs and a MySQL database layer.
Our engineering team designed a custom session-tracking layer that sat on top of standard SMS protocols. This allowed the system to accurately parse incoming text messages, maintain user state across the ordering funnel, process payment details securely, and queue requests directly to a centralized restaurant tablet screen in real time.
To handle the infinite-level parent-child menu hierarchies, we implemented smart recursive database algorithms and memory-efficient data mapping. This ensured that no matter how complex a restaurant's menu customization was, the system processed options instantly, allowing the UI to remain incredibly fast and manageable for restaurant owners.
Following a highly successful market validation phase, the startup was officially acquired by a major restaurant chain. As the product integrated into the parent company's ecosystem, we continued to provide dedicated, occasional production support for nearly 2 years, ensuring absolute stability for active users.
